I’m currently going through a great eight week program with some guys where we keep each other in check with our weekly goals - Its been a rewarding experience and it allows me to share what I know plus learn a lot from them.

If there are some changes you want to make in your life, sometimes the best way to make that change happen is to change the way you think.

Affirmations work!

I’m going to go through 9 steps of how to write an effective affirmation statement. The book I got this from is called Success Principles by Jack Canfield. It’s a brilliant book that I suggest picking up!

Here are the 9 guidelines:

Start with the word ‘I am’. The subconscious mind takes any sentence with the word ‘I am’ and interprets it as a command - a powerful directive to make it happen

Use the present tense. Describe what you want as though you already have it, as though it is already accomplished. (Example: I am going to get into shape. Better: I am fit, strong and powerful)

State it in the positive. Affirm what you want, not what you don’t want. The unconscious mind does not hear the word no. This means that the statement “Don’t slam the door” is heard as “Slam the door”, this is because our unconscious mind thinks in pictures, so those words will evoke an image of the door slamming. Better example is “I will close the door quietly each and every time”.

Keep it brief. Think of your affirmation as an advertising jingle - act as if each word costs $1,000. Being short allows it to be easily remembered & memorable.

Make it specific. Vague affirmations produce vague results. (Example: I am driving a red new car. Better: I am driving a new red Porsche 911 Carrera)

Include an action with the word ending with -ing. The active verb adds power to the effect by evoking an image of doing it right now. (Example: I express myself openly & honestly. Better: I am confidently expressing myself openly & honestly)

Include at least one dynamic emotion or feeling word. Include the emotional state you would be feeling if you had already achieved the goal. (Example: I am maintaining my perfect body weight of 178 lbs. Better: I am feeling agile and great at 178!)

Make affirmations for yourself & not others. Make sure they describe your behaviour and not others. You’re only in control of yourself at the end of the day! (Example: I am watching Johnny clean up his room. Better: I am calmly communicating my needs & desires to Johnny)

Add ‘or something better’. If you have affirmations around a specific situation (better job, opportunity, relationship, etc), always add the words “or something better”. Sometimes there is something better for us that’s out of our current awareness, include this phrase when you can, so you leave your options open to improvement. (Better: I am enjoying living in my beautiful beachfront villa in Maui or somewhere better)

Now that you know how to create affirmations, how can you take them to the next level and apply them better?

Visualizations!

Use visualizations to lock the affirmation in your subconscious. It’s proven that emotion helps lock things in our memory better, here are some tips:

Visualize what you would like to see as if your affirmation came true. Place yourself inside the movie that’s playing and see things happening through your own eyes. Ex. If you want a car, see the world from inside your car as you are driving - take a real test drive if you need the inspiration

Hear the sounds you would be hearing if you had already achieved your affirmation.

Feel the feeling you want to feel after you have created what you want - stronger feelings make this more powerful.

Remember to review your affirmations daily. Best times are morning, noon and bedtime. The more you practice, the more it will lock in.

Read them aloud if that helps you get into them and visualize them!

Post pictures of your completed affirmations around the house - I’ve created vision boards in the past that have really inspired me.

Hope you like and good luck! :)

Leaders change. Companies implode. Strategies get modified.

Notice a pattern here?

Everything is going to change. And it will change again and again.

You have to ask yourself. Am I the kind of guy that’s going to roll with the punches and turn lemons into lemonade, or resign myself to the events going on around me? It’s easy to get pulled under when the tsunami hits.

You define your fate. Not your events.

Adaptability and the right attitude can go a long way in the business world. The ‘right attitude’ only gets tested when things go wrong. The real test comes when your world turns upside down. Can you handle the pressure?

A lot of people can’t.

And that’s ok. But you need to realize that even if you think you can’t, you might be able to. We are all stronger than we give ourselves credit for.

You have to be outside your comfort zone in order to grow. It’s usually very uncomfortable, pretty damn scary and can make you feel less than. But it’s the greatest gift you can give yourself if you decide to take the less trodden path and be someone who’s willing to take on challenges and welcomes change.

If Change equals fear. It’s normal for people to fear change. Great people run towards their fear.

Choose to be great.

Never Give Up...Keep Moving Forward...

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done. Now, if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain’t you! —Rocky Balboa

Some ideas on how to keep them...

80%+ of New Year’s resolutions fail. Fail!

It seems like the movie Ground Hog day every year - minus the happy ending. What to do? I don’t like failing and I’m sure you feel the same way.

I decided to write about two things:

How to write some kick ass new year resolutions (Great questions for you to ask)

Some tips on how to do better this year (To increase your success ratios)

Reflecting on 2011

If you’re going to learn how to be a better person, a great place is to look at your past. The good and the bad. Here are some questions to ponder (I cobbled this together from many sources online):

What went well in 2011? (Make a list of 10 items that made you happy, proud, your successes or something you would celebrate)

What did not go well in 2011? (Be real here, you’ll learn a tonne by asking this one question - where did you fall short, what failed or didn’t work for you?)

What are the 3 best lessons I learnt over the last 12 months?

What was I doing (behaviour) when I achieved my best results in 2011? (Think back to one of your successes in 2011 - Were you in the “Zone”? Define that…)

What baggage from 2011 can I drop? (Everyone has baggage!)

2012 - Bigger, Badder, Sexier You ;)

If you do these questions, I know you’ll have a good idea of what you want to accomplish this year.

What would make me Happier? (It could be more of something or less of something - you decide which one motivates you more. What would I celebrate?)

What are my Big 5 Goals for 2012? (Feel free to pick from multiple areas like health, family, wealth, spirituality, learning, etc.)

What things can I stop doing NOW?

Are there any small nagging issues weighing down my happiness? (This may drive other actions you need to take)

What are three words or values you can use to define your 2012?

Tips to help you succeed:

Make sure ALL your goals are S.M.A.R.T - Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time Bound. Ex. I want to be healthier in 2012 = FAIL. Ex. I will exercise 60 minutes per week to train for and run a marathon by June 30, 2012 = SMART!

What concrete actions would bring about your big 5 goals for 2012?

Stick to one big goal per month - something will slip if you take on too much. Break your goals down by month if you can.

Start small and work your way up. Iterate upwards, not downwards ;)

Find a way to hold yourself accountable - post your goals publicly, tell your friends about your specific resolutions or find a partner in crime who has the same goals.

Most importantly: Look at your big 5 goals + your concrete plan every day. Post them in multiple visible locations around your house.

Next steps for me -I’m going to post some of my goals publicly. I wrote this post for myself as well…lol ;)

Cheers and let me know if you liked this post? :)

An obligation to spend our time doing great things. To find ideas that matter and to share them. To push ourselves and the people around us to demonstrate gratitude, insight, and inspiration. To take risks and to make the world better by being amazing.”

- Seth Godin

Thin red line between success and failure

Sometimes there is only a small decision that gets made between walking away from something or putting all bets on it that it succeeds.

Small decision to stay or go. But very big consequences.

Sometimes there is only a small decision that separates you from success and failure.

When should I stay and when should I go?

Am I a bit philosophical today? Yes :P

There obviously is no right answer to this question. It depends on your unique situation and what’s right for you.

Sometimes placing all bets on something is what it takes to get it done. And sometimes walking away is the right thing to do, so that something better can come into your life.

We should all reflect a little over 2011 and figure out what actions have served us well and what things we need to change for 2012. Maybe one change could make all the difference ;)

Cheers and let me know what you think?

We humans wrap our own chains around ourselves…holding ourselves down.

The lucky ones realize this early and spend our entire lives unlearning the negativity that holds us down and learning how truly powerful each one of us are…

Every one of you can make a difference if you choose to. Don’t ever let someone tell you that you don’t matter or are not capable.

I’m tired of seeing great people playing small (including me)

You are a fucking Lion!

Your heart beats the ferociousness of a Lion

Your soul has the majesty of the King of Lions

Your presence inspires others like the noble Lion

In each one of you is a greatness that the world deserves and needs to see. The world is big enough that you can play it in your own way, your own style.

You are not this:

Figure out what’s important for you and go after it. Don’t be the scared Lion anymore…

Stumbling blocks would now be seen as stepping stones to something better, or something to crawl over or walk around. Previous limitations would now be a mere triviality, at worst a slight inconvenience. There were insanely great things to create and we were here to create them and that’s all there was to it. All thoughts to the contrary were irrelevant.

That’s how I still live today.
”

- Christine Comaford

Great story on how Drop Box made it big!

Great story on how Drop Box made it big!

I think I hit a nerve....

I posted this today on Facebook…

And you guys really liked it, I mean really really liked it.

It’s really only two circles we are talking about, but I think all you recognized the simple yet profound truth contained within.

To do great things, we’ll ultimately have to leave the safety net of our own individuals comfort zones…

Your comfort zone is different from mine. And that’s awesome. We are all not chasing the same magic.

So how do we get to where the magic happens?

Go into your fear - that’s the sign post. Fear will always lead you past your comfort zones…

I’m scared as hell, but I’m also making some Magic! :)))))))

We fear the highest possibilities. We are generally afraid to become that which we can glimpse in our most perfect moments, under conditions of great courage.

We enjoy the thrill to the godlike possibilities we see in ourselves in such peak moments. And yet we simultaneously shiver with weakness, awe, and fear before these very same possibilities.

Obviously the most beautiful fate, the most wonderful good fortune that can happen to any human being, is to be paid for that which he passionately loves to do.

- Abraham Maslow

Your Calling...

I’ve been reading Peak and an interesting story came up between the author and his friend. His friend was asking him:

“What’s really most important to you in your work life?”

The author responded his mission and vision of the company (something he truly believed in).

His friends response blew him away:

“Get it through your thick skull. Your calling in life is to be an artist posing as a businessman. You’re probably the best paid ‘artist’ I know. You are rich, just in a different way than most of America defines that word.”

Got me thinking about a few things:

I think a lot of us are artists and we use Business as our canvas. Sounds pretty sexy no? I think that’s always been the reason I’ve been fascinated with entrepreneurs and why I love reading non-fiction books. Anything that can help me become a better ‘artist’ always feels good.

Who’s scorecard are we using to define our success? Are we using someone else’s scorecard? or ours? I know that I myself am guilty of not truly owning what my definition of success is.

What really important in your work life? And are you living your calling?

All heavy deep questions that I sit with everyday…Thanks for listening :)
